About the role

Main Purpose of the Job

To provide an accountable statutory social work service to children, young people, and their families/carers, including assessment, intervention, case planning, and review appropriate to the team and service unit.

Summary of Responsibilities and Personal Duties

  • Manage all social work tasks on allocated or short-term assessment cases.
  • Maintain accurate records of work and ensure service users can access these records.
  • Inform service users of their right to lodge complaints about the service.
  • Prepare case reports and correspondence for diverse readerships, including meetings, courts, and agencies.
  • Adhere to policies, procedures, guidance, and legislation.
  • Address the needs of service users from diverse communities, emphasizing equality.
  • Participate in duty systems within the service unit.
  • Build and maintain working relationships with external agencies.
  • Input data using Information Technology systems.
  • Ensure the safety of oneself and others by addressing potential risks.
  • Attend and contribute to supervision sessions.
  • Engage with internal contacts across divisions and external contacts, including other authorities, agencies, and the public.

Additional duties include adhering to the Council’s policies on dignity, performance evaluation, health and safety, and environmental considerations. Flexibility and adjustments may be made for disabled staff.

About you

Knowledge

  • Familiarity with the Children Act 1989 and related legislation.
  • Understanding child protection policies and best practices.
  • Awareness of issues faced by minority communities.

Aptitude

  • Analyze data and plan interventions effectively.
  • Work collaboratively with parents, carers, and agencies.
  • Undertake direct work with children, parents, and carers.
  • Produce clear and professional documentation.
  • Organize workload efficiently.
  • Recognize accountability limits and seek appropriate support.
  • Use or commit to learning Information Technology.

Skills

  • Strong communication and relationship-building abilities.
  • Planning and assessment skills in childcare situations.

Experience

  • Previous experience in assessment and planning for children and families.

Qualifications

  • Good literacy and numeracy standards.
  • Social Work degree or equivalent.
  • Registered with Social Work England.

Personal Qualities

  • Self-motivation, interpersonal skills, and flexibility.

Special Requirements

  • Occasional evening or weekend work.
  • Ability to work independently.

We have a strong working relationship with Goldsmiths, University of London as part of the South East London Teaching Partnership so our practitioners have the opportunity to teach on social work courses as teaching consultants.
