Throughout October, the London Borough of Bexley celebrated Black History Month by 'reclaiming the narrative'

Bexley staff hosted and attended a programme of events throughout the month, organised by the borough's Global Majority Workers Group. It was a huge success, a celebration dedicated to honouring rich contributions both in Bexley and historically.

This year’s theme, “Reclaiming the Narrative”, invited staff to reflect on the diverse history and experiences that shape the local community. It provided all staff across children's services to better understand the culture of many of the families that they support.

The event was packed and full of inspiration, with a line up of guest speakers, including Councillor Sue Gower MBE JP, the Mayor of Bexley and Stephen Kitchman, Director of Children Services.

Throughout the month Bexley hosted events on a range of topics, from speakers such as Maria Takaendisa and Tashanna Egbochue, including:

  • Two sessions on the importance of Allyship
  • The Impact of Trauma on the Productivity and Mental Health of Ethnic Minorities
  • Letting go of internalised racism ad self-limiting beliefs
  • Reframing our culture with children’s books
  • Transforming Dreams into Reality
  • Story Telling and African Proverbs
  • Bexley Anti-Slavery Day Conference
  • Preserving Our Cultures Through our Voices
  • Reimagining SEND (Special Educational Needs & Disabilities) within Black communities
  • Our closing event took place by way of an Artisan Market Place

Attendees were also treated to a performance by Tyla Sky, a multi-talented R'n'B singer and social worker!

As Black History Month come to a close, we carry forward a renewed sense of purpose and unity; as the events, conversations, and connections we shared have strengthened and motivated us to advocate for positive change throughout the rest of the year and beyond.
